TECH-OLOGY wins €500k IT infrastructure for Ball Packaging Madrid

Ball Packaging, Guadalajara, Madrid, Spain

Ball Packaging are one of the world’s largest manufacturer of aluminium drinking cans, each of the factories manufacturing millions of cans per day. Strategically placed close to beverage producers such as Coke Cola, Red Bull and Heineken, Ball Corporation, reduce carbon footprints with reduced transit from manufacturing plant to beverage supplier.

Ball’s latest £140m+ manufacturing facility in Madrid, Spain, is a purpose built factory with the capability of running four lines consecutively. The factory start-up in November 2018 consisted of 2 lines with a 3rd coming online in early 2019. Ball Packaging will aim to produce 1.5 billion cans in 2019.

In March 2018, TECH-OLOGY were approached by Ball Packaging IT department to respond to tender for the network cabling infrastructure. As a Molex site, TECH-OLOGY worked closely with the manufacturer to ensure pricing and delivery schedules would be met for a tight timeframe.

Basing the first phase (of four) on a 6-week schedule, TECH-OLOGY won the tender bid and arranged a start on site mid-March 2019. Deploying four cabling engineers, based from locally sourced accommodation. Stringent Spanish health and safety and site requirements were completed and our workforce commenced the containment infrastructure on time and to schedule.

As the weeks followed, site hold ups due to weather, material and access issues, extended phase one (for all contractors) by 2 weeks. TECH-OLOGY in this time, worked closely with Ball Packaging, developing a plan and schedule for Phases two and three, ensuring we maintained consistency with our teams and preventing return travel costs.

Phases two, three and four were seamlessly completed, through the summer and autumn with temperatures at times reaching 55°C near the top of the factory. TECH-OLOGY engineers worked with all other trades, both local and foreign, building a collaborative team approach to the project and changes.

On completion of phase three. TECH-OLOGY were asked to complete a wireless site survey based on the customers installed design. Utilising industry recognized software, we were able to complete a full site survey and tweak the installation to ensure complete coverage to the factory and offices. The success of this work and report has increased TECH-OLOGY’s services offering into Ball Packaging and we expect to see further wireless surveys and installations.

From this project in Spain, TECH-OLOGY was able to show and deliver services and value above that expected or requested:

  • Production fibre installation and testing for another company
  • Wireless survey and installation
  • Supplied materials more efficiently than the incumbent manufacturer
  • Provided engineering and project management resource on an ad-hoc basis
  • Provided installation support for network hardware

TECH-OLOGY has proved its capability to deliver quality customer service and support, by delivering service value at every opportunity. Since TECH-OLOGY’s first interaction, Ball Packaging have asked TECH-OOGY to assist in its IT infrastructure specification by undertaking design and RFP packages for the following

  • Mini Data Centre cabinets
  • Structured Cabling product and their distribution networks
  • Fire suppression systems
  • Passive Optical Fibre networks
  • Power Transfer switches
  • Cabinet security
